parallel distributed processing models

Could you please clarify what the parallel distributed processing models are?

Parallel processing models propose that there is a "preconscious" track that allows us to deal with some information with out "thinking" about it. The system is believed to be something like the pattern recognition system we talked about relative to movement into short-term memory. Anderson's procedural knowledge basically tries to explain the same issue thought the notion of automaticity.

There is clearly some component in the cognitive system that allows for this type of processing but the exact mechanisms of the system are still being debated.
